Masks of the Black Death: Medieval Pandemics and Modern Twists

Coming right before Halloween and during the Covid-19 pandemic, this free online event will provide a platform where students can learn about and discuss a medieval pandemic. This event will be a series of short, live video talks relating to the Black Death, a pandemic that occurred in the Middle Ages, by members of the Medieval Studies faculty at Winthrop University. Presentations will include

  • Jo Koster, "What's a Little Plague Among Friends? Christian and Islamic Writers Respond to the Great Plague"
  • Kyle Sweeney, "Art and Visual Culture in the Wake of the Plague"
  • Gregory Bell, "We all fall down: Experiencing the Black Death"

While free, this event does require pre-registeration:
